Fortune
04:22
|
|||
Fortune has a double edge
Sometimes I think it cuts
Today you've got enough
And others not too much
The early signs of scars
Are gifted on the poor
Who draw the shortest straw
Who draw the shortest straw
And in the hospital
The sink fills up with hair
The women check for holes
More than before
She has what I have not
He has what I have never
We wish the body whole
We wish the body whole

Once again the office floor
Some decision making by the Men-in-suits
“And do we consult the girls?”
Girls are pushing 40 in the typing pool
Treat us like a herd and we are cowed
Relegated to a basic usefulness
Girls are pushing 30 on the till
Girls are pushing 40 in the typing pool
You did not even see her
You did not know her second name
She just had always been there
If you think it does not count
I could pick a couple sharpest names for you
Naming is what marks us down
Girls are pushing 40 in the typing pool
Even though the woman is your mother
You would cut experience from under her
Girls are pushing 30 on the till
Girls are pushing 40 in the typing pool
You did not even see her
You did not know her second name
She just had always been there

Astronaut
06:04
|
|||
My mother was an astronaut
She spent all her time away
Only ever came down for the births
My father was her husband
Sometimes we'd get to watch her on the TV
With our dinner
She was circling circling
My father would sometimes cry a little
And call his brother
To come and comfort him
The Russians did it also
But much earlier - out of curiosity
At first they sent up empties
And then silkworms
And then a monkey
And finally their most efficient women
These women were my mother's friends
Their meetings were at first absurd
And then commonplace
My mother had no weight
Historical or otherwise
They would experiment
On where cress grows best
Or how to build a sky net
Or how
In a normal way
To make life more than the sum of its parts
When she got very old
She retired there
And was gone
I only had a picture of her
And was always a little shocked
Because she was not glamorous

Ballad About Bhopal
03:31
|
|||
I don't know what hangs round there
Now the air is once more air
Death leaves no stain
Only on the memory
Everything is as it was
All in the grip of the heat
Water comes slow from the pump
Man with his last cigarette
Watches the last of the day
Children dig holes in the ground
Wait for the siren to blow
Deep in the Union Carbide
Workers break off from the shift
Cluster the bicycles out
Punch through the clock at the gate
Home and it's home for the night
Town that exists on its knees
Never woke up to the day
Gas from the Union Carbide
Poisoned the people in sleep
And for the children unborn
Still they are dying today
When will the company pay
Seems like no never no not
Buried the case in the court
Everything is as it was
All in the grip of the heat
Water comes slow from the pump
Man with his last cigarette

The Running Man
04:04
|
|||
The man ran
As things were getting bad
He ran to a wall
The wall was the law
The law hit like a block
The law hit like a block
The man could not stop
Draw the curtains please
There's one citizen less
Draw the curtains please
Neatly, neatly
Draw the curtains please
There's one citizen less
Draw the curtains please
Neatly, neatly
We must keep it neat

Body Strategic

She's not a blonde
She sings and exchanges things for songs
If she's a cartoon
I must be real life
Oh my darling what have you for me?
This is the current notation for passion
These are the signs of love
These are the signs of love
It's quite an art
The body strategic
We watch in awe
Her legs snip bits out the air
She's only playing
She plays passion for us
She plays passion for us
Fuck without touching but
Fuck without touching but
She plays passion for us
She's playing passion for us
Fuck without touching but
Fuck without touching but

In A Row

In a row they lie
People say people say
There but for grace go I
Not so
In a row
In a row they lie
People say people say
There but for god go I
Not so
Someone else
In a row they lie
On screen
somewhere else
People say
There but for grace go I
Not so
Not so
They lie
They lie
